In Other Thoughts 11/12/2009

Tue Nov 10, 2009, 11:14 PM
First entry for new watchers

No excuses for my absense. Okay, maybe one. I've been warming myself up to do video blogs on YouTube.. Instead of worrying about getting this stuff typed up (Cause it really takes much longer than it looks like), Ill just speak to a camera. Now I haven't made any videos yet, I've been getting a webcam and microphone ready.. I've bought and have been getting use to a nice video editing program, trying to get over my immense self-consciousness of my ugly ass being displayed for the public to gawk at.. Between school, work, and trying to replace In Other Thoughts with a vlog.. There hasn't been much time to write this stuff out, but Ill do my best to update at least once every two weeks minimum. If I can, Ill try to surprise you guys every now and then with a once a week.

No more delays! HI HO SILVA'! AWaY!

[Word of the Week]
Ultimatum - a final, uncompromising demand or set of terms issued by a party to a dispute, the rejection of which may lead to a severance of relations or to the use of force.

[World Fact]
Though most of us were told as a child that swallowing bubble gum would stay in our intestines and stomach for years and years, the chewable treat passes through us regularly as does any other food. A truer statement would be, "It would take years and years for the gum to dissolve and digest if it were to actually stay in the stomach". The rubber and gum content in the treat make it extremely difficult to digest, but not to pass through.. leaving it to be relatively unchanged when it exits.

[Fact About Me]
My favorite number is 8. I think it has something to do with it being a verticle infinity symbol (which would be my favorite symbol)

[Song of the Week]
By Your Side by Tenth Avenue North, Album "Over and Underneath". Listen to it on YouTube

[Question of the Week]
Why do we say 'heads up!' when we actually mean 'duck!' ?

In Other Thoughts..

I was watching some vlogs, and someone made me realize that I am a skeptic. It's not a bad thing, it's actually pretty admirable if you think about it. Now the general idea of a skeptic is they're negative about anything they're told, always trying to disprove the unbelievable.. But this is inaccurate. Just like it was explained to me is how I feel about it.. Skepticism is more about trying to prove an unbelievable fact by asking questions, trying to understand the concepts about and around it, and doing one's best to find evidence to support the fact. The majority of the time a skeptic will find evidence against the fact, but one now understands a little bit more about the concept, and a little more about the world. There might be asshole skeptics who demean or degrade those after they find their fact-destroying evidence, which is one reason why many couple skepticism with pessimism.. The other reason would be because it seems we're upset that something can be so amazing that we need to disprove it.. But like I said (and like it was explained to me).. Skepticism is more about trying to prove the amazing thing truly exists, instead of accepting that amazing thing with a risk of it being wrong. We'd rather find undeniable proof so we know the amazing thing can never go away.

There's one thing for me, personally, that my skepticism completely ignores and goes around, and that's Christianity. I'm a christian.. Certainly not one of the most strict, judging, conservative Christians.. But I have my beliefs about God and what happens after life. There's this little bubble in my mind.. I dont ask questions about Christianity, I accept what I've been taught and what I've experienced regardless of the countless evidence scientists and my atheist best friend come up with. Why do I fail to ask questions and test my faith? Because Christianity comforts me and makes me happy. To some it seems like a false hope, false comforts.. But if false hopes and comforts are the only thread of happiness I have left in my life, then let me cling to them and leave me alone. I have opened my mind to the world as best as I've been able to for years and years. I've seen a lot and experienced a lot even at 19 years of age.. I know Im not the most disadvantaged or advantaged person in the world.. Nor am I the most emotionally neutral in order to keep my feelings about people and the world equal.. But I think I've done a pretty damn good job at keeping an open mind. Like I said.. I'm Christian and one of my two best friends is an atheist. I accept him, he accepts me. My whole religion rule is exactly what we were taught in church. "Ask and ye shall receive". I refuse to force my religion onto others, just like I refute others who try to do it to me. I keep my beliefs to myself if you'll keeps yours to you. Now if you have questions about mine, or one day decide to convert for whatever reason there might be and you come to me and ask me to help you, I will gladly answer whatever questions you have, or set you on the path you're looking for.

In summary..
Im a skeptic. I do my utmost to understand the world and the people in it to the best of my ability, and you will be surprised at what I know just by looking at you. The only thing that skepticism doesn't cover is religion, because I dont want to even attempt disprove the only thing that brings me happiness, or what may bring you happiness.
